Helping

The earthquake that rocked the Haitians this week has been so overwhelming on so many levels. I'm sure many of you are feeling like I do, how can I enjoy the comforts of my day whilst others are in such agony. Its easy to feel anger, guilt, and numbness as you watch the news flash images of helpless people trying to pull bodies from the rubble.

Wanting my daughter to understand why I was feeling sad today, I mentioned that we needed to be praying for the people in Haiti because there was an earthquake and many people are hurting and even dying. She said "Its ok Mommy Jesus will help them die." I was so shocked by her words, but as I thought over what she said, realized that it was true. Yes, Jesus was helping these people die. Its an awful thing to think about on one hand, but on the other hand I do believe that our Savior can sympathize with all of our weaknesses even the final weakness of death. So now I'm not only praying for a miracle to happen in rescuing people from the concrete, I'm praying that before the Haitian people leave this earth they will cry out to the Savior and allow him to help them die. Never will he leave us or forsake us even in death.

If this disaster dredges up questions and you are looking for some solid Biblical answers check out When God Weeps and if you feel jaded about helping but know you need to check out When Helping Hurts.
If you want to give but don't know where to do that without feeling like you might be dumping your money into a bottomless pit check out giving through Compassion International. They have been in Haiti for over 40 years doing ministry and many of the children they reach out to have been affected by this disaster.
