He Sustains Everything
In these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God's glory... sustaining all things by his powerful word.
-- Hebrews 1:2-3
Behind Jesus' rough cloak and beard, the simple conversations with neighbors, behind the humble circumstances surrounding his life, powerful things were going on. Things of universal importance. Even as Jesus plodded the dirt paths of Judea -- preaching, debating, healing, and listening -- the entire universe leaned every hour on his divinity.
Even as Jesus walked the hills of Galilee, the North American brown bear took his Creator's cue to begin hibernation. As Jesus told his disciples to leave their nets and follow him, the Arctic tern awaited signal to leave its breeding grounds eight degrees south of the North Pole and go winter in the Antarctic. While Jesus took time to bless little children and listen to the chatter of Jewish mothers, a female water spider listened to his echoes in her brain tell how to trap air bubbles and house her eggs in silk at the pond's bottom. When Jesus woke up early to go to the mountains to pray, the nocturnal owls listened for his command to leave their hunting and return to their nests for rest. Even when Jesus looked up at the stars, he was not only enjoying their splendor - the splendor he created - he was sustaining all celestial orbits by his powerful word.
If Jesus could hold together, by his silent command, the muscles and tendons of the soldiers who whipped him, breathing into them the very energy required to flail him, if Jesus could bless his accusers in this way - and he did - then, oh, think of the energy God can give you to bless all those around you. What a powerful Savior we have!

You not only sustain everything else by your word, you uphold me. Thank you that in you I move and breathe and have my very being.
